Rummy is a card game enjoyed and loved by all, irrespective of age, due to its distinct blend of strategy and skill. There are also different types of rummy played all over the world. So, when learning how to play rummy, players often need to take into account the variant they want to get into.
However, the fundamentals of every rummy game remain the same. In this article, let’s review some of the fundamentals of rummy that will help novice players when they’re first starting out.
The Objective of Rummy
A standard deck has 52 cards with four suits – clubs, spades, diamonds, and hearts. Each suit has 13 cards, each 13*4=52, which has cards from 2-10 with face cards: Ace to King, Queen and Jack.
The objective of rummy is to form sets and sequences using the 13 cards you are dealt and make valid declarations before your opponent.
Setup of Rummy Game
- Each player gets 13 cards, so if two players are playing, 26 cards get distributed among players. The other pending cards become part of the draw pile.
- The game starts on the left-hand side of the dealer, played in a clockwise direction.
- The game is played in turns. Each player draws a rummy card from the draw pile at each turn. It is where the players decide whether the drawn card helps them create a set or sequence. If the card is not helpful or does not form a part of their game strategy, then the card becomes part of the discard pile.
- The player must maintain 13 cards in their hand after every discard.
- It continues until a player makes a valid declaration.
Understanding Formation of Valid Sets and Sequences in Rummy
- Sets are created using cards of the same rank but from different suits. For Instance, a set of 3 jack of club diamond and spade, number 3 of heart club and diamond, etc
- Sequences are created using three or four cards from the same suit arranged naturally in consecutive order. For Instance, a sequence of spades using Ace 2 and 3 or a sequence of King Queen Jack of diamonds.
- A player has to create one pure sequence to make a valid declaration.
- In some rummy games, Jokers are used. The Joker acts as a wild card, working as a substitute to form a valid set or sequence. For Instance, in Ace Joker 3 and 4 of Spade where, the joke is substituted in place of 2 of spade.
